Now, how does Jesus help us? Make sure you grasp this: The temptation is there and the temptation is from Satan. How do we resist temptation? In the book of James, Chapter 4 and verse 7 we read, "Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you." First we have to submit to God. We can never resist Satan if we don't first submit to God. What does this mean, in a practical way? It means to decide to let God take care of the situation. That means to surrender to God, not to fight him anymore. This is what some people find so difficult, because we are not used to saying, "let go … and let God." We want to do things our own way, with our own strength, and we have tried many times and failed.
Then, the secret of success is to surrender to God. Now how do we to do this? In the book, Steps To Christ, pages 47 and 48, we read, "Many are inquiring, 'How am I to make the surrender of myself to God?' You desire to give yourself to Him, but you are weak in moral power, in slavery to doubt, and controlled by the habits of your life of sin. Your promises and resolutions are like ropes of sand. You cannot control your thoughts, your impulses, your affections. The knowledge of your broken promises and forfeited pledges weakens your confidence in your own sincerity, and causes you to feel that God cannot accept you; but you need not despair. What you need to understand is the true force of the will. This is the governing power in the nature of man, the power of decision, or of choice. Everything depends on the right action of the will. The power of choice God has given to men; it is theirs to exercise."
