So we need to understand the true force of the will. But, ¿Is that the same as will power? I remember that when I was a child there was a group of young people that used to take a cold shower in the morning just to develop will power. I also remember a Japanese athlete in the Olympic Games, a few years ago who, even though he was injured and having a great deal of pain, he forced himself to participate. You could see the pain in his face, but he still competed even though it was very painful. That is what we call will power. But this is not what is meant by "the power of the will". The power of the will is the power to chose that God has given to man-the freedom of choice, and it is ours to exercise. That means you can decide to do anything and God will provide the power if it is according to His will. And we know that it is God's will that you lose weight naturally. If you decide, "I am not going to get off the program", God will help you. If you say to yourself: "I am going to make permanent life style changes to be thin and healthy", then, you are truly using the power of the will, that is, the power of choice. You make the decision, God will supply the strength to do it.
Let us continue reading from the book, Steps To Christ: "The power of choice God has given to men; it is theirs to exercise. You cannot change your heart, you cannot of yourself give to God its affections; but you can choose to serve Him. You can give Him your will; He will then work in you to will and to do according to His good pleasure. Thus your whole nature will be brought under the control of the Spirit of Christ; your affections will be centered upon Him, your thoughts will be in harmony with Him." See? your whole nature will be brought under the control of the Spirit of Christ. And this is very important, because we saw earlier that one of the fruits of the Spirit was Temperance. And temperance allows us to avoid those things that are fattening, and to use with moderation those that are wholesome.
